I usually like to introduce the idea of cells but not get into the details of the parts until we talk about proteins/protein structures, etc. I found it really strange to go into some pretty technical details of cell parts in chapter 1. As I mention below, it could be really useful to be able to link directly to certain topics. The breakdown seems ok, there are some long chapters with relevant parts included. Some topics get a lot more detail than others though, some exceedingly detailed on topics that I would consider more appropriate for courses beyond an introductory level. The framework seems consistent from chapter to chapter. Some parts of the book get exceedingly detailed on topics that I would consider more appropriate for courses beyond an introductory text. It can provide interesting details but honestly my students don't care about the lives of most of these scientists. I think it is easy for the author to update as needed, but with a pdf instead of a word doc for instructors it is much harder for them to make any changes they want.Ī lot of the text is more wordy than I would like. I do wonder about some of the information included on the personal lives of some of the scientists- some of them were so long ago that I would think that do not necessarily have good records of their personal lives. Some topics are comparatively not covered in as much detail, but still have plenty of detail for this level of course.Īll of the content appears to be accurate from my flipping through it. It even includes some topics that are not always covered in textbooks in very much detail, such as transposons (pages instead of a paragraph at most). The book covers all of the topics of Cellular and Molecular Biology in good detail. Reviewed by Erica Lannan, Professor of Biology, Prairie State College on 3/13/23
